The Southern Cape Buffalo, commonly known as "Black Death" is found throughout most of Africa, amongst other subspecies. They appear very similar to Water Buffalo, but can be distinguished by the horn "boss" on the top of their heads, resembling a helmet.
Both males and females have horns. The male is larger, darker, and has a horn "boss".
They can form herds up to the thousands. There are mixed herds, bachelor herds, and sometimes solitary males. They are dangerous animals to hunt, which has earned them a spot on "Africa's Big 5" list.
