Taurotragus oryx oryx

The Cape Eland is found in South Africa, Namibia, and the Kalahari region of Botswana. They are identified by their grayish to light tan hide and their massive size, which earns them the place of the world's largest antelope. They look similar to the Livingstone's Eland, however the Cape Eland lack well defined stripes on their back.

Both males and females have horns. The male has heavier horns and an old male will grow a tuft of long dark hair on their forehead known as a "ruff".

Eland are mostly browsers, enjoying trees and shrubs, preferring to feed at night. They usually form small herds, but larger ones are not unheard of. There are bachelor, nursing, and breeding herds. Most fights between males occur in the bachelor herds.

If you listen closely you can hear the clicking sound Eland make when they walk.
